Many people in every community, including ours, suffer various afflictions that impair their abilities to stand, walk or run. These include birth deformities, injuries, and arthritis, among a few other conditions. Modern orthopaedic surgery can correct many of these conditions and transform people’s lives. Operation Stand-Walk-Run (OSWR) has been established with a mission to enable Nigerian patients to benefit from the advances in orthopaedic surgery that many in other countries are privileged to have. We intend to play a role in this process through the training of surgeons, developing facilities, advocacy, and humanitarian care.
The OSWR mission has resonated with many, and we have garnered significant support.
In March 2022, OSWR undertook an unprecedented humanitarian exercise, carrying out several knee and hip replacement surgeries while training surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and therapists. Live-changing surgery that had been financially out of reach to many were performed successfully. This surgical mission was a collegial effort between Nigerian and United States-based volunteer healthcare workers. We are grateful to all who have supported this endeavor. We welcome additional contributions to help us reach many more patients, sustain the effort, grow Operation Stand-Walk-Run, transfer knowledge/skills and ultimately elevate the level of orthopaedic surgery in our country.
